Job Description: Sanitation Manager
Job Summary
The Sanitation Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing sanitation programs that ensure a safe, clean, and compliant production environment. This role leads sanitation personnel, maintains regulatory compliance, supports food safety systems, and drives continuous improvement in sanitation efficiency, hygiene standards, and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
Sanitation Operations
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily sanitation activities across production and facility areas.
- Develop sanitation schedules aligned with production requirements.
- Ensure proper cleaning, sanitizing, and verification procedures are consistently followed.
- Oversee cleaning of equipment, processing areas, warehouses, and common spaces.
Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain compliance with all applicable regulatory and safety standards (FDA, USDA, OSHA, GMP, HACCP, SQF, or applicable industry regulations).
- Support food safety programs including HACCP plans, environmental monitoring, allergen controls, and preventive controls.
- Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits and inspections.
- Maintain sanitation documentation, logs, and corrective action records.
Leadership & Team Management
- Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise sanitation team members and supervisors.
- Provide ongoing coaching, performance management, and development opportunities.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate cross-functionally with Quality Assurance, Maintenance, and Production teams.
Program Development & Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate sanitation effectiveness through inspections, ATP testing, microbiological results, and KPIs.
- Implement corrective actions and root-cause analysis for sanitation failures.
- Optimize chemical usage, labor efficiency, and sanitation procedures.
- Lead initiatives to improve sanitation processes, equipment design, and workflow.
Safety Management
- Enforce safe chemical handling and PPE requirements.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies and hazard communication standards.
- Conduct safety training and incident investigations related to sanitation activities.
Qualifications
Education
- Equivalent combination of education and industry experience considered.
Experience
- 5+ years of sanitation or food manufacturing experience.
- 2+ years in a supervisory or management role preferred.
- Experience with sanitation in food processing, beverage, pharmaceutical, or manufacturing environments.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of GMPs, HACCP, and sanitation validation processes.
- Knowledge of FDA/USDA regulations and audit requirements.
- Leadership and team management skills.
- Problem-solving and root-cause analysis capability.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Proficiency with sanitation chemicals, CIP systems, and cleaning equipment.
- Computer proficiency (MS Office, sanitation tracking systems, ERP systems).
Work Environment
- Manufacturing or processing facility environment.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals and industrial equipment.
- Requires adherence to strict safety and hygiene standards.
